In honor of Black History Month and Women’s History Month, we would like to start this edition of the Family Corner newsletter by recognizing the words of Audre Lorde. A powerful Black feminist essayist and poet, Lorde directly and unapologetically confronted injustice in the form of racism, sexism, classism and homophobia through her writing and activism.

How are you celebrating Black History and Women’s History this year?

In this edition of the Family Corner newsletter we’re exploring the power of community and cultural pride. We can leverage both of these protective factors to support ourselves and our young people. Doing so is essential during times of societal instability and uncertainty. We recognize that stress levels are rising for many, and we have gathered articles and resources to help.

Gina Newsome Duncan

Gina Newsome Duncan, MD, FAPA, is a board-certified adult psychiatrist in private practice and the lead mental health expert for the Steve Fund’s Family Corner. She earned her BS in Chemistry from Hampton University, her MD from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, and completed her residency at Harvard in the MGH/McLean Hospital Adult Psychiatry Residency Program. In her private practice, Dr. Duncan takes a strengths-based approach to the treatment of adult mood and anxiety disorders as well as ADHD using medication management and psychotherapy. She regularly presents and provides consultation to community and faith-based groups as well as academic and professional organizations.
