At the Steve Fund’s Family Corner, we are working to build a community where all families and their young people feel safe, seen, heard, celebrated, and fully supported. For example, among the many heritage and awareness months each year, September offers families the chance to support mental health in unique and important ways.

First, Hispanic Heritage Month, from September 15 to October 15, celebrates the tremendous contributions of the Hispanic/Latine community. No matter your culture or background, there is much for young people and families to gain by learning about and celebrating others. Honoring Hispanic Heritage and Mental Health <link to come> explores the Hispanic/Latine community’s psychological strengths that can help bolster the resilience and well-being of your young people.

Second, given the challenges in the U.S. today, parents and caregivers can take a proactive stance for mental health during National Suicide Prevention Month each September. In the article If Self-Harm is Possible, Be Proactive <link to come>, you can explore risk factors for self-harm and suicide as well as protective factors and strategies parents and caregivers can use to create a safe emotional space for your young person. In addition, Keeping Young Women Safe from Self-Harm <link to come> examines challenges unique to Black girls and other young women that can put them at greater risk for suicidal ideation. The article also discusses strategies to enhance support and break unhealthy family patterns.

We hope you find these resources helpful and that you will share them with your family, young person, and your community.
