Ever since we’ve had the conversation about gap years, I had been thinking about whether or not I should (more like could) take one. The idea of gap years is something my family isn’t too fond of. I understand their fears that I may become lazy, unmotivated, and less intelligent. I have the same fears, too. But, I strongly believe that taking a gap year can definitely improve yourself as a person. You can gain new perspectives, experience more opportunities, and make self-discoveries.
I think it’s important to remember that taking a gap year isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you take a gap year, you can travel with a friend, take classes you’re interested in, follow a new passion you haven’t had time to learn about, and even do nothing at all. Whatever you do during your gap year, and for whatever reason you may take one, you give yourself the opportunity to grow. You don’t need to rush through life to reach your goal. After high school, you don’t need to immediately find a job, go to college, create a family, or whatever it is you have your mind set on. It can be stressful if you have this mindset. But if you can take a deep breath and give yourself time, maybe through a gap year, it will benefit you in the long run to reach your goal.
