Have you ever wondered how medications for mental health conditions work or whether medication may be helpful for you or a loved one?

Mental health conditions are medical conditions. Similar to treating asthma, diabetes, or heart disease with medication, it may be necessary to treat some mental health conditions with medication to manage symptoms, prevent the condition from progressing, and allow a person to function at their best.

The importance of mental health is acknowledged more today than in the past. Mental health has become a common subject in our society and in everyday conversations. Our last series of articles, All About Therapy, explored key themes related to therapy for mental health conditions. It is also necessary to talk about mental health medication when it may be required, and how to work with a provider who can help.

Overcoming stigma with access and information

As with any health concern, the sooner a mental health condition is recognized and treated, the greater the likelihood of a positive outcome. So why do so many suffer in silence?

Three factors that can impact mental health care in our communities

  1. Access. For many, lack of access to health care because of insurance, cost, location, or limited availability of culturally responsive providers can keep people from getting the care they need.
  2. Stigma. Fear of what others might think or say can discourage people from seeking treatment that could improve their quality of life.
  3. Information. Not having an accurate understanding of what mental health treatment involves and how medications work serves as another significant barrier. For communities that have historically experienced mistreatment in the medical system, having accurate information about symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment is key when it comes to advocating for medical care for ourselves and our loved ones.
